Addo Elephant Park was established in 1931 and is a sanctuary for more than 350 of the giants as well as Cape Buffalo, Black rhino and a selection of antelope species.

During the 1800’s with the colonisation of farms around the area great herds of elephant were killed.

This came about as a result of the competition between the elephant population and the local farmers for water and crops. By 1931 there remained only 11 Addo elephants.

Thankfully public opinion began to change and the park was proclaimed in 1931.  Today Addo is the third largest park in South Africa.
