Mapungubwe National Park, Limpopo

The Limpopo-Shashe Transfrontier Area, shared by Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe

renamed the Greater Mapungubwe National Park, Limpopo

The name Greater Mapungubwe TFCA was preferred because all three countries already have sites called Mapungubwe

Mapungubwe in South Africa is already a World Heritage Site and this is an extension of the status

The Tuli Block, is home to Southern Africa’s largest private game reserve, the Mashatu Game Reserve, spanning some 450 sq km

The Tuli’s rocky terrain was originally earmarked to carry Cecil John Rhodes’ Cape to Cairo railway across eastern Botswana

Unable to tame the wild landscape, engineers were forced to reroute the railway line to the west

This left the Tuli Block to be sold off to colonial farmers, who in the 1960s decided to merge their lands and establish a wildlife paradise spanning 120 000 hectares.

The entire portion of the Tuli Block that lies north of the Motloutse River is dedicated to conservation and forms part of the North-East Tuli Game Reserve, which includes a variety of smaller private reserves

steenbokGame viewing throughout the Tuli is superb. The natural grazing patterns of large elephant herds and a wide variety of antelope mix together with warthog and hippo. Abundant lion prides, cheetah, leopard and hyena complete the impressive game checklist

Tuli is an area rich in archaeological and historical sites, which provide evidence of early settlements. Pottery shards, beads, smelting relics and granaries can be seen at a number of these sites

Highlights include the confluence of the Shashe and Limpopo Rivers, where two magnificent swathes of sand a number of kilometers wide, meet; the towering Solomon’s Wall, the site of an ancient waterfall 10m wide and 30m high, and the deepwater gorges of the Tswapong Hills, a granite range through which water has carved deep gorges.

Mapungubwe in South Africa are the mysterious mountains- and a World Heritage Site

Game drives and walking trails are available and night drives are permitted, to enable the visitor to witness rare and elusive nocturnal creatures such as caracul, porcupine and leopard.

Horseback game viewing and mountain biking in the reserve has become increasingly popular, combining game viewing with the excitement of approaching wild animals in their natural habitat
