CREW: The Lady J’s crew being a captain deckhand & chef. The crew have their own crew quarters with ablution block

THE VESSEL IS CAPTAIN DRIVE ONLY. Your own boat may be towed behind “Lady Jacqueline” – entirely at your own risk provided a maximum of two tender boats are towed at any one time.

FISHERMAN: If you are a keen fisherman, bring your own rods, tackle and bait. Kapenta, bait for tiger, can be organized for you from an outlet in Binga.

Limited fishing tackle is available for hire from the crew.

ADDITIONAL TENDER BOATS: can be arranged

THERE IS AN H2O WATER PURIFICATION SYSTEM on the vessel and it delivers “okay” water. It is still recommended that bottled water be used for drinking purposes and this can be purchased on board, strictly subject to availability.

LAKE USAGE FEE: These levies are not included in your prepaid charter fees and are additional charges for your account. The levies will be payable by you to the National Parks official that may intercept the cruiser on exiting the Harbour.

PARKING:Self drive clients can park the vehicles at Msumu Lodge at their own risk

CATERING – you can either bring your own food and the cook on board will prepare all your meals, or we can supply catering for you

Sample menus and rates on request

CLEANING MATERIALS – toilet paper; air freshener; dish washing liquid; personal washing powder; charcoal; matches; paper serviettes; etc. are not supplied on the houseboats

If you are self-catering you will need to bring these items with you, if we are catering for you we can supply these items @ $30-$40/charter

DRINKS – these can either be brought with you or we can order drinks have them pre-loaded for you – drinks are sold on a sale & return basis – product & price lists on request

Air-conditioning & Generators

  • Lake law is that all generators be turned off after 10o’clockin the evening. This means they are no use for sleeping in cabins, however are very pleasant when having dinner in the dining room should you wish to eat inside. Most people enjoy the fresh air and sleep on the top deck.
  • The generators on the boats can only run for a maximum of five hours a day. This is sufficient time to keep the deep freezes and refrigerators cold. Please do not ask the Captain to extend the hours of the generator.
  • On air conditioned vessels, the air conditioners will only be turned on while the generators are running

How much will fuel cost?

It depends on the size of the boat, distance traveled and how much air con you use. Diesel boats tend to be much less expensive to operate. Always demand that the Captain takes a
fuel reading with you before and after the cruise

Charters

Vessels are rented out on either a bareboat/self-catering basis ( no meals /refreshments teas/coffees) but there are also various catering options available – which are recommended. Most charters leaving from Kariba, dependant on the length of the booking, will spend the duration of the charter at various mooring points along the Matusadona National Park shoreline (south of Kariba town)

Included in Rate
Hire of houseboat, 15% Sales Tax, 2% Tourism Levy, cutlery, crockery and linen. The use of the tender boats and service of crew as specified on the webpage

Excluded in Rate
Fuel for mother boat and for tender boats.
Clients pay for fuel on completion of the hire. This is paid at the end of the charter in cash or travellers cheques or certain Credit Cards. Please take a reading with the Captain before and on completion of the charter.

Professional Guide: A pro guide can accompany the trip, for walking and general guiding from the tenders, this would be an additional fee.

Fishing: Basic fishing equipment is provided, but it is essential that any serious fishermen/women bring their own rods and tackle and make special arrangements with us for bait etc. We do provide a professional fishing guide at an additional fee. Additional fishing boats and bait will form part of these costs.

Usual tender boat supplied: 2 pontoon boats with covered roof and fold away comfortable seating.

Pool:At the front of the boat on the 1st deck is a large 4 m x 3 m pool with a large umbrella covering the entire pool.

Deck areas:There are 3 large deck areas: On the 1st deck at the front of the boat surrounding the pool, on the second deck at the back and on the top deck, surrounding the captain’s wheelhouse.

Power:All of the Umbozha fleet have generators powering the lighting and wall sockets at 240v as well as a 12v battery system when the generators are not running. All plug points are UK Square pin (please bring suitable adaptors). Generally the main generators are switched off between 10 and 11pm whereby the 12vbattery system takes over until morning.

MATUSADONA WILDLIFE/FISHING CRUISE : CREATE YOUR OWN DATES WITH A MINIMUM OF 3 NIGHTS AND 4 CABINS

Departs & returns to Kariba Town / Harbour (but we can collect or drop you from any of the Matusadona partner lodges)

Cruise across the Lake to the Matusadona National Park to our first night mooring in a secluded bay or river inlet. Scrumptious local fresh cuisine often utilizing fish caught ourselves during the trip.

Daily activities of YOUR choice from our tender boats (tenders are the smaller boats that travel with the main houseboat) fishing, game viewing, birding or simply taking in the magnificent views as we explore the rivers and bays of this part of the lake.

There are optional extras of walking and game drives deep into the national park from one of our partner lodges.

Many guests combine 2-3 nights of a Matusadona lodge /partner product with this cruise and we can easily transfer you or collect you from these properties at any suitable time to yourself.

TWO OR THREE NIGHT KARIBA TO BINGA CRUISES

Departing from Kariba mid-morning followed by a scrumptious buffet lunch while cruising the lake to the far end of the Eastern Basin near the famous Bumi Safari Lodge.

We moor on one of the islands or the shoreline for an afternoon of wildlife activities and sundowners from the tender boats then after dinner cruise through the night to the Sengwe River Basin. Morning & afternoon adventures into the beautiful & remote Sengwe River system with its great birding and possible wildlife sightings followed by sundowners and an evening beach braai.

On day three we enjoy leisurely breakfast aboard the main vessel while cruising to Elephant Bay/Masumu River Lodge. From here those on the 2 night cruise will depart for onward transfer.

For those staying aboard for a 3rd night we will enjoy activities in and around Elephant Bay and the Binga area or simply relax on board, followed by sundowners from the tender boats and dinner.

Day four we cruise to harbour over breakfast for a mid morning onward transfer to your next destination.

TWO OR THREE NIGHT BINGA TO KARIBA CRUISE

Early morning collection from your Victoria Falls/ Hwange/Livingstone/Chobe Lodge or Hotel, followed by an interesting transfer to Binga.

Depart harbour by midday followed by scrumptious buffet lunch while cruising the lake to the beautiful and remote Sengwe River. Late afternoon activities include exploring the River system with its great birding and possible wildlife sightings followed by sundowners before returning to the boat for a relaxing beach braai.

TOUR GUIDE POLICY

Each cruise will have a guide/ host on board for activities courtesy of Zambezi Cruise Safaris

*Please note*For guided group series there is no specific tour guide cabin on our boats , therefore(unless a vacant cabin is available, for which there will be no charge ) the guide will be required to use day beds on the covered deck areas with mosquito nets and public ablutions.

Tour Guides not using a dedicated cabin will be charged at $ 75 per person / night

If a cabin is required for the guide / pilot this will be charged at standard cabin rate

There is mobile network coverage for 70 % of the Lake and very limited 3G and mobile internet

There is no WIFI or internet connectivity on board of the vessels

Dress code onboard is casual

It is imperative that all clients have a wide brimmed hat /sunglasses/ sun block /mosquito repellent and are taking anti malarial treatment

Recommended Accessories; Binoculars ,camera, torch ,reading material (Kindle ) , electricaladapters ( boats are equipped with 3 pin square 220 volt plug points)

Recommended Clothing:Light long sleeved shirt , jogging pants , flip flops, walking boots( if bushwalking) , swimming costume, lightweight safari clothing

*Please note*Long sleeved clothing and trousers should be lightweight and are a precaution againstmosquitoes at night when on the open deck (watching the stars when we are crossing the Lake)

Zambezi Cruise Safaris has scheduled FIT Cruise departure dates for 2018 for the Sengwe River Cruises and Full Lake Cruises from Kariba to Binga and Binga to Kariba .However we are able to create further dates of any length based around group series bookings.

Matusadona Wildlife & Fishing Cruises are booked upon request and limited to Group Series and or with minimum of 4 Cabins.

Any cancellations or amendments to cruise departure dates will be communicated at least 60 days prior to any departure date

HEALTH & SAFETY

A health and safety talk will be given to all passengers prior to the cruise departure. At least two members of each vessel’s crew are fully trained in first aid within the past three years.

All of our vessels are fully equipped to their maximum passenger capacity with life jackets ,life rings and life rafts .On board is also a fully stocked first aid box.

Each vessel travels with at least one tender boat which also acts as a rescue lifeboat from the main vessel

All of our vessels are equipped with a navigation and radio system and are in contact with other vessels and the Lake Captains in Kariba and Binga

Lake Kariba and Zambezi River /Valley are Malaria areas and we suggest all clients take the necessary prophylactics. ( Please consult your local doctor for further advice )

INSURANCE

There is no better way of enjoying Lake Kariba than from the decks of Umbozha. Fitted to the highest standards of luxury, with cabin-space for 28 persons in five family cabins, two twin bedded cabins and two master suites with queen-size beds – all air conditioned.


With a large, central lounge/bar/dining area, two outside deck areas, a pool and an upper deck area there is ample room to spend time together or take in the surrounds in a more intimate setting. Carrying two tender boats and four crew members you are ensured first class hospitality and the option of exploring every corner of the lake.

Professional Guide: A pro guide can accompany the trip, for walking and general guiding from the tenders, this would be an additional fee.

Fishing: Basic fishing equipment is provided, but it is essential that any serious fishermen/women bring their own rods and tackle and make special arrangements with us for bait etc. We do provide a professional fishing guide at an additional fee. Additional fishing boats and bait will form part of these costs.

Usual tender boat supplied: 2 pontoon boats with covered roof and fold away comfortable seating.

Pool: At the front of the boat on the 1st deck is a large 4 m x 3 m pool with a large umbrella covering the entire pool.

Deck areas: There are 3 large deck areas: On the 1st deck at the front of the boat surrounding the pool, on the second deck at the back and on the top deck, surrounding the captain’s wheelhouse.

Power: All of the Umbozha fleet have generators powering the lighting and wall sockets at 240v as well as a 12v battery system when the generators are not running. All plug points are UK Square pin (please bring suitable adaptors). Generally the main generators are switched off between 10 and 11pm whereby the 12v battery system takes over until morning.

MATUSADONA WILDLIFE/FISHING CRUISE : CREATE YOUR OWN DATES WITH A MINIMUM OF 3 NIGHTS AND 4 CABINS

 

Departs & returns to Kariba Town / Harbour (but we can collect or drop you from any of the Matusadona partner lodges)

Cruise across the Lake to the Matusadona National Park to our first night mooring in a secluded bay or river inlet. Scrumptious local fresh cuisine often utilizing fish caught ourselves during the trip.

Daily activities of YOUR choice from our tender boats (tenders are the smaller boats that travel with the main houseboat) fishing, game viewing, birding or simply taking in the magnificent views as we explore the rivers and bays of this part of the lake.

There are optional extras of walking and game drives deep into the national park from one of our partner lodges.

Many guests combine 2-3 nights of a Matusadona lodge /partner product with this cruise and we can easily transfer you or collect you from these properties at any suitable time to yourself.

 

TWO OR THREE NIGHT KARIBA TO BINGA CRUISES

 

Departing from Kariba mid-morning followed by a scrumptious buffet lunch while cruising the lake to the far end of the Eastern Basin near the famous Bumi Safari Lodge.

We moor on one of the islands or the shoreline for an afternoon of wildlife activities and sundowners from the tender boats then after dinner cruise through the night to the Sengwe River Basin. Morning & afternoon adventures into the beautiful & remote Sengwe River system with its great birding and possible wildlife sightings followed by sundowners and an evening beach braai.

On day three we enjoy leisurely breakfast aboard the main vessel while cruising to Elephant Bay/Masumu River Lodge. From here those on the 2 night cruise will depart for onward transfer.

For those staying aboard for a 3rd night we will enjoy activities in and around Elephant Bay and the Binga area or simply relax on board, followed by sundowners from the tender boats and dinner.

Day four we cruise to harbour over breakfast for a mid morning onward transfer to your next destination.

 

TWO OR THREE NIGHT BINGA TO KARIBA CRUISE

 

Early morning collection from your Victoria Falls/ Hwange/Livingstone/Chobe Lodge or Hotel, followed by an interesting transfer to Binga.

Depart harbour by midday followed by scrumptious buffet lunch while cruising the lake to the beautiful and remote Sengwe River. Late afternoon activities include exploring the River system with its great birding and possible wildlife sightings followed by sundowners before returning to the boat for a relaxing beach braai.

After dinner we cruise to the Eastern Basin near Bumi Hills Safari Lodge. Spend the day enjoying activities including fishing, game viewing from tender boats or optional game walks and game drives in the Matusadona national park from one of our partner lodges.

End the day with relaxing sundowners as you enjoy a sunset cruise.

On day 3 we enjoy a leisurely breakfast aboard the main vessel, those on the 2 night cruise will depart to caribou labour for onward transfer.

For those staying aboard for the third night there will be activities around the bays and inlets or simply relax by the pool.

Day four we cruise to harbour as we enjoy breakfast and arrive for your midday onward transfer.

 

TWO NIGHT VIC FALLS – SENGWE RIVER CRUISE

 

Early morning departure from Victoria Falls/Hwange National Park/Livingstone/ Chobe to Binga arriving for a mid-day departure cruising to the Sengwe River. Evening activities & sunset wildlife cruise down the Sengwe River followed by drinks and dinner on board.

Early morning activities of fishing, guided walks or game viewing followed by brunch whilst we cruise to Elephant Bay where we moor on one of the Island’s with a sandy beach where we relax around a camp fire and watch the sunset over the lake followed by a beach braai.

Morning activities and cruise back to Binga harbour for your onward transfer.

Getting There– to Kariba

  • Kariba is 366 Kms from Harare, 806 Kms from Bulawayo and 3 hrs by road from Lusaka
  • Charter planes and boats operate between Kariba and island lodges as well as Mana Pools and Victoria falls
  • Flights to Lusaka or Harare and road transfers to Kariba are popular
  • From Vic Falls by road to Mlibizi then cruise to Kariba aboard The Ferry

Arriving before departure date
Lake Navigation rulesdo not permit people to stay in the harbour overnight,unless special arrangements have been made prior to your arrival. You will have to seek alternativeaccommodationif you arrive after 5pm

On Board
No smoking is allowed in any of the cabins, only on the open decks.
The sun is harsh so remember your sun tan lotion and a broad-rimmed sun hat.
Houseboats generally sleep 10-12 people, so most people try to fill up the boat to keep the cost per person as low as possible.

Tender boatson a boat are quite important as you need to move up and down the shoreline game viewing or fishing. Should the boat not have tender boats, you can hire speedboats from aKariba harbourto take with you on your houseboat trip

Air-conditioning & Generators

  • Lake law is that all generators be turned off after 10o’clockin the evening. This means they are no use for sleeping in cabins, however are very pleasant when having dinner in the dining room should you wish to eat inside. Most people enjoy the fresh air and sleep on the top deck.
  • The generators on the boats can only run for a maximum of five hours a day. This is sufficient time to keep the deep freezes and refrigerators cold. Please do not ask the Captain to extend the hours of the generator.
  • On air conditioned vessels, the air conditioners will only be turned on while the generators are running

How much will fuel cost?

It depends on the size of the boat, distance traveled and how much air con you use. Diesel boats tend to be much less expensive to operate. Always demand that the Captain takes a
fuel reading with you before and after the cruise

Charters

Vessels are rented out on either a bareboat/self-catering basis ( no meals /refreshments teas/coffees) but there are also various catering options available – which are recommended. Most charters leaving from Kariba, dependant on the length of the booking, will spend the duration of the charter at various mooring points along the Matusadona National Park shoreline (south of Kariba town)

Included in Rate
Hire of houseboat, 15% Sales Tax, 2% Tourism Levy, cutlery, crockery and linen. The use of the tender boats and service of crew as specified on the webpage

Excluded in Rate
Fuel for mother boat and for tender boats.
Clients pay for fuel on completion of the hire. This is paid at the end of the charter in cash or travellers cheques or certain Credit Cards. Please take a reading with the Captain before and on completion of the charter.

Harbour Parking Fee
CAR PARK FEES vary from harbour to harbour on a per vehicle per night basis and are payable by the client upon arrival at the harbour.

Catering

Drinks Beers and Minerals, ice and bait – this is arranged separately for you on a Sale on Return basis. You can fax an order for drinks which is placed onto the boat prior to your arrival. The full amount due for the drinks order is to be paid upfront and before departure on the charter and then at the end of the trip the client will be reimbursed for drinks not consumed. A small delivery fee is charged and any broken/lost bottles or crates will be placed onto the client’s account. Please bring your own spirits & imported wines

Fishing Gear

Only basic gear is supplied on a few boats. Fishermen should bring their own rods, tackle etc. Bait can be purchased along the sides of the road or in the harbour before boarding.
FISHING WORMS
No fisherman can embark on a trip to Kariba or the Zambezi without a box full of fishing worms for those delectable bream! There are side-of-the-road worm sellers all along the main road between Harare and Karoi, the most enterprising being those selling “Anaconda Worms” just before the town of Banket. Prices are negotiable and bargaining is standard. Make sure you keep your precious worms regularly watered, fed with vegetable peelings and kept cool out of the hot sun. Make a worm-box out of a cardboard shoebox. Reinforce the bottom with a layer of corrugated cardboard and punch some small breathing-holes in the lid. HAPPY FISHING!

National Parks Fees– Zimbabwe national parks charge a separate fee for Lake usage and fishing Usage, please make sure you carry cash for this

Adverse Weather Conditions

Weather conditions on the lake vary from time to time and can change very quickly.
It is a STRICT CONDITION of your houseboat hire agreement that you and all those in your party clearly understand the following: In theCaptain’sopinion, if the weather develops or show signs of developing into conditions that may danger human life or threaten the safety of the houseboat, his decision NOT to proceed and seek shelter is final

The Captain & Crew

The Captain and crew are there to ensure your stay aboard the houseboat is comfortable, enjoyable and as safe as possible.

Their employment contract has a strict NO ALCOHOL ON BOARD HOUSEBOATS condition and if broken will result in their IMMEDIATE DISMISSAL from employment, forcing unnecessary hardships upon them. It is important that you DO NOT attempt to encourage crew members to drink alcohol

Once you board the boat The Captain’s word is FINAL – and passengers will not be allowed to interfere with the running of the boat – failing which the charter can be cancelled and returned to harbour

Feeding Animals
The animals you see in the Park are WILD animals and it is strictly prohibited by law

Noise Levels:Please remember others and keep noise levels to a minimum, especially when your boat is harboured on the shoreline of the Matusadona National Park or close to other houseboats.

Do we have to clean the boat before we leave ?: you don’t have to swab the decks but the boat should be returned in the same condition when you boarded.

Can we make a fire on shore: Definitely No

Can we leave the houseboat to go onshore?
Passengers are reminded that you are not allowed to walk more than 20 metres from any boat moored on the Matusadona National Park shoreline, unless you are accompanied by a registered Zimbabwean Professional Guide who has anoperator’slicense for the Matusadona National Park. Anyone breaking this rule is liable to a large spot fine and/or arrest as is the ship’s captain.

Is it OK to take along toddlers?
A young toddler on a boat requires constant observation, in case they fall overboard. As long as you take proper precautions you and they can have a great houseboat vacation. Make sure they have a comfortable life vest and keep it on them at all times. Have things for them to stay busy with during slower times so you don’t end up having to entertain them nonstop. Some boats provide netting around the deck which is also a help.

Is insurance included?
All rental companies insure their boats. Some offer additional insurance for you to purchase. The renter is responsible for any damages or the deductible if it is necessary to file an insurance claim

Can we tow a small boat or jet ski?
Tender Boats as they are called are included on almost all boats for game viewing and fishing.

Ø The tender boats may only be driven by the Captain or another licensed crew member, and are limited to a three kilometer radius of the houseboat. The tender boats are ideal for fishing and game/bird viewing

Ø Your own boat may be towed behind pontoon houseboats. Please note that this is entirely at your own risk.

Available are a variety of speedboats and transfer boats to be used for boating activities, and the larger transfer boats for transportation of up to 36 max people to the Islands.

Each boat is Captained by an experienced Driver, and no person other than the Captain is allowed to drive. Overnight accommodation for the captain can be arranged

Litter Please DO NOT be tempted to throw litter overboard, this includes cigarettes

Health Matters
Kariba is a malaria area and bilharzia is prevalent in the lake. It is advisable to take the necessary prophylactics as prescribed by your doctor. Swimming in the lake is definitely not advisable as the lake is infested with crocodiles and Hippos. Do not drink water straight from the river or lake, fresh water is supplied on the boat.

We recommend that before it gets dark you make adequate preparation for the night in terms of mosquito Repellents and we recommend that during the day you have adequate Sunscreen protection.
