You visit the most hallowed places in Bushman culture, attend the Annual Dance Festival and see how modern pressures have affected their lifestyles

peoples, one of the oldest cultures in Africa.

survival skills, the culture and crafts of the San people, who over
the centuries have adapted their lives to survive in the most inhospitable

ITINERARY
DAY 1: Arrive Maun and drive to Shakawe and overnight on the banks of the Okavango river at Drotsky’s cabins’ . Camp
DAY 2. We drive to Tsodilo Hills, which the Bushmen regard as the birthplace of man. and explore the hills with their 1500 plus rock paintings. We discuss the cultural importance to the bushmen. Camp.
DAY 3. Gadikwa. Cross the Okavango by barge and drive along the Okavango river to Gadikwa Camp which is a camp built with traditional materials and run by river bushmen. Lodge.
DAY 4. Gadikwa. Walk with the bushmen and learn about their incredible knowledge of their environment.
DAY 5. Sepupa. Recross the Okavango and head south towards Ghanzi. Overnight at Sepupa. Camp.
DAY 6. Ghanzi. Drive to D’Kar where we camp.
DAY 7. Ghanzi. Visit the San Museum at D’kar and attend the Dance Festival.
DAY 8. New Xade. Visit the new home of the bushmen who were evicted from the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and see how they have adjusted to the new environment.
DAY 9. Enter the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) in search of the bushmen who have returned to the CKGR.
DAY 10. We travel across the remote CKGR to Molapo and visit a settlement of bushmen deep in the Kalahari.
DAY 11. We wend our way north and camp in the Makgadikgadi Game Reserve at Kumaga
DAY 12. Game drive along the Boteti river and return to Maun in time for onward flight.
* Bushman experience - meeting local San (Bushman) who share
the art of survival in this arid land.
* Wildlife in the area ranges from gemsbok, kudu, springbok,
cheetah, leopard, the evasive brown hyena and the inquisitive
suricate (meerkat).
* Bird life is prolific and this region alone has hundreds of
species ranging from the small finches to huge vultures

Bushman Dance
The principle manifestation of their spiritual life is a ritual known as the trance dance. In the setting for a
trance dance, the women and children sit around the fire, while singing and clapping in rhythm. The men encircle
the fire in front of the singers and chant frantically, while thumping the ground with their feet. The resident
shaman- a spiritual healer- runs around the fire in circles, as he communicates with the spirit world.
When the dance mood strikes right, the shaman enters into a trance. In this state he is said to have entered
the spirit world, where he is able to consult with the spirits of long departed ancestors and those causing
illness and pain. If the consultation goes well the sick are cured, and if not they depart unto death. The
dance is usually performed at the time of the full moon.
