The en suite thatched lodge walls are built from recycled drinks cans and elephant dung Inside, however, it is tiled, whitewashed and elegantly furnished in dark African wood, with embroidered hangings and animal-skin rugs on the floor. The four-poster beds are draped with mosquito nets and can be wheeled on to the veranda for a night under a twinkling blanket of incredible bright African stars, listening to the sounds of the bush " The reeds rustled as an elephant glided his way slowly through, just 20 metres from our sleeping area" "morning traffic" consists of a chorus of mating frogs - a cacophony of purrs, croaks, whirrs, whoops, hippos honking and elephants flapping their ears. The five lodges are connected by a raised wooden walkway to the main area.
The main area features an oversize deck for outdoor dining and views over the permanent water of the lagoon, as well as a swimming pool with two sala's for refreshing sunbathing. no photograph can convey the scent of sage brush in the early morning, the sound of vultures on a dead elephant, or the incredible brightness of the African stars. This area, situated on a private concession neighbouring the Moremi, is
superb for viewing all animal and bird species.
Guests may explore by land and water, often into the night to discover nocturnal species. The permanent water of the camp will reveal a world of floating safaris, atmospherically silent at the gentle pace of a poled mokoro (dug-out-canoe) excursion, or faster in a comfortable shaded motorboat. (Subject to water levels.) A myriad of waterways, feathery beds of papyrus, and animal species, large and small, are waiting to be discovered. Sometimes there is no better way to tune into the bush than on foot, and walking safaris is a speciality at Baines', with skilled, armed guides introducing the area's natural wonders.
