Bulawayo and Matobos Hills

The site of Bulawayo was chosen by Mzilikazi's successor Lobengula in 1870. He called it Gubulawayo, meaning " The place of slaughter", to commemorate his battle victories

Getting There

By Air:
Most incoming flights on international carriers land in Harare, with a connecting flight to Bulawayo on Air Zimbabwe. There are several flights daily between Bulawayo and Harare.
South African airlines SAA fly direct to Bulawayo from Johannesburg, Charter flights and private jets are of course accommodated at Bulawayo airport. Taxis and the Air Zimbabwe bus offer transfers between the airport and the city, a distance of 22kms.

In addition a ZITF courtesy bus meets SAA flights during ZITF.

By Road:
Fully tarred roads give access to Bulawayo from border towns to the North (Victoria Falls, Kazungula and Chirundu), the West (Plumtree), the South (Beitbridge) and the East (Nyamapanda and Mutare).
Car hire is available in Harare and the larger cities, but most operators use a mileage charge and this can be the expensive option. The distance from Harare to Bulawayo is 430km. Several luxury coach services offer connections between Bulawayo and Harare.

By Rail:
