The Okavango Delta is a fragile eco-system that remains one of the World's least spoilt and most beautiful wildernesses.
The Moremi National Park is situated in the Okavango Delta and forms an intricate part of the Delta.
The park takes is 4871 km2 in surface area.
This comprises:
-
of permanently
swamped areas
-
seasonally swamped areas
-
dry land.
Moremi is a prime wildlife area where elephant, hippo, buffalo, lion, lechwe and most other game can be seen in abundance. It is probably one of the prime tourist destination in Botswana
The Makgadikgadi pans cover an area of 39 999km2 and incorporate a series of pans, the two main ones being the Sowa pan in the east and the larger Ntwetwe pan in the west. The pan system was once part of an inland lake, that covers most of the north of Botswana and is believed today to be one of the biggest salt pans in the world. It is not surprising that astronauts can see the outline of it from space.
The park takes up an area of 4144km2 and incorporates the northwestern corner of the Ntwetwe Pan. The wild life in this park is very seasonal and at certain times of the year one can see zebra, wildebeest, gemsbok, springbok, ostrich, brown hyena, lion, cheetah and giraffe. The Sowa pan is the largest breeding colony of greater flamingoes in Africa and is a spectacular sight to see the beautiful birds out on the pan. The best time to visit this area is between May and Early October.
The pan is 21 000km2in in extent and it is a combination of grassland, thick bush, acacia, baobab trees, wide open spaces and dry pans that fill up in the rains and are the currency of life for all that live in the area.
In the park there are a group of Baobab’s that are called Baines’ Baobabs as he painted them in 1862.
As the hot dry season sets in the animals become dependent on the water supplies that are left in the pans.
The game that can be see in the park are lion, cheetah, gemsbok, wildebeest, giraffe, elephant, springbok, jackal, bat eared fox, red hartebeest and the elusive brown hyena
