Tips for Kariba Houseboat Rentals

Air conditioning.The law is that all generators be turned off after 10 o' clock in the evening. This means they are of no use for sleeping in cabins, however it is very pleasant to escape the heat of the day especially during Sept, Oct and November

No of cabins in a houseboat is not always as important as you may think. The Zambezi valley is very hot and there is nothing nicer then sleeping on the deck under African stars listening to the calls of animals, covered by a mosquito net, and just using the cabins as change rooms

Tender boats towed behind a houseboat are important as you need to move up and down the shoreline game viewing and/or fishing. You cannot use the main houseboat for game viewing as the tree stumps make it too dangerous.

Some houseboats only include the boat rental,
others the houseboat rental with fuel
and some houseboats are fully Inclusive, which means the price includes the boat, fuel, drinks and all your food.

With the fuel shortage in Zimbabwe, most houseboats have limitations of how far you can travel per day.

Food Options
You can either use a fully catered option or you can self cater. A chef / deckhand is part of the crew and will prepare your meals even if you take the self -catering option

Fishing
Only basic rods are sometimes supplied. Best to bring your own or rent from a Kariba shop. Bait is best ordered through us at least a month ahead, or when you book.

First Night is best spent in Kariba - accommodation

We suggest that you spend the night prior to boarding your houseboat in Kariba itself. Lake rules are that you may not sleep on board in the harbour and if you are arriving from further away then Harare or Lusaka you could be late

" Stop Over " - Spurwing Island

A good "stop over" for the last night of your houseboat safari is Spurwing Island. A short 45 min speedboat ride from Kariba. It gives you a chance to go for game drives etc, while the houseboat returns to harbour

For very small parties (1 to 4 people) it is a excellent alternative to hiring a houseboat as you can fish by boat, go for game cruises, game drives or walks in Matusadona park.
