Elephant Trail - Walking Safari

This is a true wilderness experience and off the beaten track you rarely encounter any people. The group consists of the guide, the guests and a couple of staff who assist in carrying the equipment needed.

Each guest will be given a backpack with sleeping bag, set of cutlery, limited dry food supply and their own luggage. This is not a heavy load but you need to be reasonably fit to enjoy the safari to the full.

The expedition lasts from 3 nights up to a week for those who wish to fully immerse themselves in the bush. Game sightings are rewarding and elephant, lion, antelope and zebra are commonly seen. Matusadona is one of the last strongholds of the wild, endangered black rhino and this safari enables us to search for these shy animals and camp anywhere we wish.

The elephant trail is particularly enjoyable over full moon, camping above a spring we can watch the nocturnal movements of the rhino and others in secret

The Lion Trail

Is a completely mobile safari so that we can focus on finding the lions and following their movements. Each night is spent camping on the shoreline where the lions tend to concentrate and during the day we leave the camp and search for them on foot.

Lunch is set up under a tree en route to the next camping spot and the group arrives in camp in the early evening to find the complete camp, cold drinks and hot showers waiting.

Although finding lions is obviously the highlight of these trails, there will be plenty of exciting encounters with elephant, buffalo, numerous antelopes and possibly the elusive black rhino,
leopard or cheetah. The trails are led by a professional guide and whilst the emphasis is on walking, the distances covered are not long although you do need to be fairly fit especially in the hotter months between September and March. Matusadona is said to have the second highest density of lions in Africa

Matusadona Day Explorerlioness
